The Barnum and Bailey Ringling Brothers Circus Story
The Ringling Brothers was an American traveling circus company founded in April of 1871 and was initially known as The Greatest Show On Earth. Purchased in 1906 by the Ringling Brothers, after James A. Bailey's death, both Barnum and Bailey's Greatest Show On Earth and the Ringling Brothers circuses were operated separately until merging 1919. The new operation becoming known as The Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Combined Shows. Eventually, in 1956 the circus stopped performing under its portable tent known as "The Big Top" using permanent venues including arenas and sports stadiums until 2017. The new circus configuration continued to thrill and amaze audiences nationwide with its breathtaking, death-defying stunts and other performances. In 1967 the Greatest Show on Earth was purchased by Irvin and Israel Feld and a judge from Houston Mr. Roy Hofheinz from the Ringling family and continued to perform under the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey's Greatest Show On Earth. In 1971, Mr. Felds family and Mr. Hofheinz sold the circus to Mattel, the toy company eventually repurchasing it in 1982. Mr. Irvin Feld passed in 1984, leaving Feld Entertainment, an international firm headquartered in Ellenton, Florida, to his son Kenneth. Due to weakening attendance and high operating costs, the circus performed its last show in May of 2017 after 146 years.
