Ichiban means First or Best in Japanese
First Press refers to the brewing process. Kirin is the only major brewer in the world to exclusively use only first press brew. Typically brewers use a blend of first and second runnings of the mash. Occasionally some use a third press. The first press is the lightest, cleanest press. Additional presses generate deeper bodies and bitters. Kirin prides itself on its light refreshing taste. Other beers are formulated for richer deeper flavors developed in the second press. Using first press only is more expensive in that the mash is only used once.
The bottoms of these glasses are not factory mistakes! Air bubbles are purposely blown into the inside bottoms of these glasses so that when beer is poured, it will be disrupted by the air bubbles and create a frothy foam head.
Bonus Fact: The Kirin is not a dragon but rather a mythological beast that portends happiness. Legend says that when Confucius was born in 6 B.C., the Kirin appeared before his mother.
