Rare and Unusual Chalkware Figurine
Kewpie Baby Lollypop in Hand
For Your Chalk Ware Collection-Kewpie2
Details
Description:
A rare and rather unusual heavy chalkware or chalk ware figurine of a Kewpie baby standing with a lollipop in his hand and the other had in his mouth. The baby is standing next to a tall hollow round column which could serve as a vase or pencil holder. We believe this piece is a carnival prize from the 1920s. It is better made than the usual carnival prizes and heavier. However, it is an old figurine, most likely from the 1920s, that is very well done and show the details of the body and head of the baby from both the front and back. It has coloring of large black eyes, brown curly hair and a red lollipop. The baby is wearing green pants and is standing next to a green hollow column. A very well made old chalk piece. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date:
Uncertain but most likely sometime in the 1920s or 1930s if a carnival prize or could be earlier.
Origin:
This chalkware figurine was acquired at an estate in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size:
The piece measure ~9 1/4" in height with the base being ~6 1/4" by ~3". The piece weighs almost 3 pounds and 5 ounces.
Maker:
Unknown
Marks:
Has a paper label on the bottom from the dealer who sold it to the previous owner Indicating the piece was originally purchased from "The Four Y's General Store Gifts & Antiques" in Tuckahoe, N.J.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece:
This is a nice and old piece with a rare and very desirable form. It would make a worthy addition to your collection.
Condition:
The figurine is in very good condition. The piece is intact without breaks, hairlines or repairs. It does have some very minor losses to the surface with no appreciable large chips. Remnants of what we believe was a tape or a label can be seen on the bottom of the base next to the dealer's label. There is a stain on the baby's head, which we are uncertain what it is and whether or not it is cleanable. The figurine has scratches and dings along the entire body but especially along the edges of the base, the top of the column next to the baby, and the arms as well as the head. Other than that the piece is fairly soiled, has some minor and very small flea bites where the coloring is lost at various spots. Finally, the piece has a few of the normal manufacturing and casting defects you would expect in a piece like this such as slubs, dimples, small holes, and uncolored spots. Be that as it may, this is great looking piece in very good condition after being around for over 90 years. Please see photos to appreciate the quality and beauty of the figurine and for additional condition information.
